As soon as I
started reading prompt number two I couldn’t help but think of professor Snape.
This is my first time reading the Harry Potter series and from the moment we
were introduced to Snape I thought that he was behind everything dark. The
first expectation that I had was that Professor Snape was trying to steal the Sorcerer’s
Stone. Rowling hints at Snape being the bad guy from his name, Severus Snape,
all the way to his character description of being dark eyed and wearing all
black. Also Snape seemed to be after Harry and almost trying to catch him off
guard at all times. This painted a grim picture in my head and immediately
forced me to believe that Snape was after the Sorcerer’s Stone. As we later
came to find out, Snape was not the one after the stone and to the contrary was
actually protecting Harry. Snape has more of a tough love that Harry needs
because most everyone else thinks that Harry is perfect but Snape keeps Harry
grounded.
The second
expectation that came to mind, out of the many in the book, was Draco Malfoy.
Rowling portray Malfoy to be an extremely stuck up “pure blood” that despised
Harry for his fame. While this is true I became obsessed with the idea that
Malfoy was more than just a pest but rather the heir to the Slytherins. I was
almost certain because he seemed like the only Slytherin capable of doing such
a dark thing. But as we came to find out Ginny was the one opening the Chamber
of Secrets under Tom Riddles control. These are just two of the expectations
that turned out to be completely untrue. The Harry Potter books are loaded with
a number of these examples and for this reason I think that is why I cannot
seem to put them down. Every time I stop reading I find myself wondering what
is going to happen next and hoping for the outcomes that I create in my head.
