Dumbledore was Harry’s father
figure and mentor. During Harry’s years in Hogwarts, Harry looked up to
Dumbledore. In book seven, we learn that Harry not only didn’t know a lot about
his mentor, but that Harry felt like Dumbledore had failed him several times by
not telling him things. We later learn that this was Dumbledore's way of preparing him for what was to come. Dumbledore distanced himself in order for Harry to discover the truth for himself, and thereby giving him the courage and determination to defeat Voldemort.
Dumbledore always was mysterious in
the eyes of the students and staff at Hogwarts. Many things that he did didn’t
make sense, however Dumbledore carefully constructed a trail of information
that could only be deciphered by Harry. When he gave the items to Harry,
Hermione and Ron through his will, he knew that only they could discover the
true meaning behind it. Dumbledore left breadcrumbs for the students to follow
and eventually they discovered them. Tales of Beedle the Bard held information
about the Deathly Hallows in which many people believed to be a children’s
tale. Dumbledore wanted to give them just enough information so they could
discover the truth for themselves and believe it.
Some would say that Dumbledore was
mad, but the people who talked about him merely cared what people thought of
themselves. Dumbledore was not one of those people; yes he cared about teaching
other students the true values and responsibilities of being a witch or wizard
however he did it in an unconventional manner. Dumbledore’s main goal was
students’ safe and Harry of course and to put an end to Voldemort. Dumbledore
knew from the beginning that it was Harry who must stop Voldemort, and so he
made it his mission to prepare Harry for what was to come.
Destiny is the biggest thing I took
from the series. Dumbledore knew his destiny was not to kill Voldemort, but to
prepare Harry for the job. The fact that we can’t know what is going to happen
or how our story might end, but through great determination and working hard
toward our goal is a great lesson among other lessons that Rowling teaches us.
