The Elder Want is introduced in the book as the most powerful want. It is one of the three deathly hallows. This wand was made by death for a brother you defeated death. The wand belongs to whoever kills the current owner of the wand.
In the book we find out the Dumbledore had the Elder wand. I was very shocked when I found this out because I was not expecting that at all. One of the reasons that Dumbledore told Snape that Snape needed to kill him instead of someone else is so that Snape would be the new owner of the Elder want. With Snape as the new owner of the Elder wand he would be able to defeat Voldemort and help Harry. Voldemort figures out about the Elder wand and he kills Snape so he can be the rightful owner of it. When Voldemort does have the Elder wand it does not work to its fullest power because he is not the rightful owner of it, Harry is. Harry is the owner of the wand and at the end of the book he becomes the owner and the master of death because he has all three deathly hallows. He puts the wand back in Dumbledores grave so that the wand can not get into the wrong hands, and that when Harry dies the wands magic will be broken because it will not have a new owner.
Harry's attitude about the Elder wand is that he does not want or need it. He thinks that it is better off in Dumbledores grave so that it does not accidentally get into the wrong hands and that the power of the want will be broken when Harry dies.
