I feel that the Elder Wand is very important- to the characters. It is often used as this symbol of great power that will help any witch or wizard conquer whatever, or whoever, they'd like. It could be compared to someone in the real world chasing after an abundance of money or positions of power. These people often become lost and misguided in their quests and can go crazy over the matter. I think the same can be said about the Elder Wand.
I find it ironic that Harry was in possession of the Elder Wand throughout a great length of the seventh book considering so many people craved the power it could give them, but there was Harry: in possession of history's most powerful wand for quite some time. I also found it to be very noble of Harry to realize that the wand was far too powerful for most wizards to handle and keep as their own. He felt it was much more trouble than it was worth. I would venture to say that he placed the wand back in Dumbledore's tomb because he felt that the wand should die with whom Harry considered to truly be the most powerful wizard of all-time. By doing this he might even be saving lives because people throughout the ages have searched for the wand and would continue to do so, but hardly anyone would expect the wand to be back in Dumbledore's tomb, therefore breaking any allegiance it had as soon as Harry died.
